Bulgaria makes an instant impression of a well-preserved natural environment with a fascinating natural diversity of mountains and hills, rivers and valleys. Our hiking destinations are the Pirin and Rila national parks with their fine highland scenery and bucolic villages which have all but disappeared in Western Europe. Popularised during Communist when a network of trails and huts was created walking is very easy and safe.
The Rila Mountains with peaks up to 2700 m magnificent coniferous forests and alpine scenery and the Rila Orthodox monastery an outstanding
example of the beautiful Bulgarian architecture.
The wild picturesque Pirin Mountains with alpine peaks over 2600 m, deep valleys, karstic massifs and glacial lakes. The small town museum of Bansko at the foot of Vihren (2914m) the highest peak.
Pirin are listed as UNESCO heritage site.
At the southern slope of the mountain close to the town-museum of Melnik are situated the sandstone pyramids an unique natural phenomenon, where matures the famous Melnik wine. A scenic footpath through the pyramids leads from Melnik village to the medieval Rozhen monastery.
The Rhodopi are lower but lovely with a mixture of pine forests, crags, highland meadows villages of stone houses, and fantastic caves around the
