Religion in Bali
The Science of the Holy Water
The Balinese call their religion Agama Tirta (‘Science of the Holy Water’), an interpretation much closer to the animism rather then to Hinduism. The many gods of Balinese Hinduism are manifestations of Sanghyang Widhi, the supreme being which manifests himself in the form of the Trisakti: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
Among the multitude of protective spirits closely related to nature is Dewi Sri (Goddess of rice) with his power to create the rice. Her captivating figure with fan-shaped headdress made from carefully weaved coconut leaf is called ‘Cili’, symbol of fertility and richness.

Rather than to theology, the emphasis has always been given to the frequent ceremonies and rituals. Offerings are seen everywhere: in the rice fields, yards, trees, temples, stone thrones and statues. Offerings can be as simple as a few grains of rice placed on a banana leaf or spectacular and colorful like the Gebogan, tall offerings three-meter-long made of palm-leaf panels and scrolls.
The ubiquitous tall bamboo pole (penjor) gracefully curving with palm leaf creations hanging from the top are part of Balinese landscape.

Pura Besakih

Cock fighting and Shadow puppet (Wayang) performance were originally associated to temple anniversaries and religious festivals. First created in Indonesia, primarily in Java and Bali, Wayang performances are completely sacred without the need of human audience (not considering of course the tourist performances). Often during special temple festivals shadow puppets are simultaneous to dance performances.

Like in the Buddhist culture Full Moon and Dark Moon are holy days for the Balinese.
The Dark Moon (tilem) is a time when the Balinese seek God’s protection, with deep devotion, to keep away bad energy and wild desires.
The Full Moon is the time when the Balinese visit the high priest to purify their body and soul and also to seek protection and to practice spirituality.
The Full Moon survives also in East Java, in Tenngger the Hindus hold a ceremony on Mount Bromo in Purnama Shada to worship their ancestors.

Ritual cremation

The ritual cremation is performed the first auspicious day after the death. If the cremation day takes place after a long time after the death, the body will lie buried until it is burned. The villagers line up with offerings piled high on their heads. In the center of the cremation grounds stands various animal-shaped sarcophagus, the appropriate animal is determined by the caste of the deceased: a bull for a Brahman male, a cow for a Brahman woman, a winged lion for the Ksatriya class, a mythological half-elephant half-fish (gajamina) for a lower-class Sudra.
The corpse, held over everyone's heads, is carried inside the coffin. Then ritual items are placed inside the coffin. Family members huddle together to take one last look at their loved one, then a high priest climbs up on the platform to recite prayers. Pots of holy water are poured over the corpse, then the pots are shattered on the ground. Hundreds of old coins are showered over the body as ransom to Yama, the lord of the underworld.
After all the materials are piled on top, the high priest ignites the fuel under the pyre. In the span of a few seconds, the splendid tower-coffin, offerings and decorations are engulfed in flames. Water is poured over the members and children are allowed to poke through the hot muddy ashes looking for coins and trinkets. Eventually, with another procession, the ashes will be brought to the sea or to a nearby seagoing river, where they are set adrift, finally freeing the soul.
