North Patan: Kumbheswar and Kwa Bahal
Taking the northern route out of the Durbar Square we headed towards Kwa Bahal known as the Golden Temple (or Hiranya Varna Mahavihar). Dating from the xii century, the Golden Temple is one of the most spectacular of the Buddhist monasteries to be found in and around Patan. Two black-stone lions guard the temple entrance. The courtyard is surrounded by a continuous veranda that can be circumambulated by the pilgrims. The whole façade of the main temple enshrining the Buddha is covered with embossed gilded copper. In front a small shrine with mythical griffin-like creatures at the corners, four naga on the brightly polished roof support the pinnacle, gajur, with 13 rings. The four corners of the courtyard have statues of monkeys holding jackfruits as offering. A Kalachakra mandala can be seen carved into the ceiling of the entrance.

From the Golden Temple we headed to Swotha Tole, a chaotic little square with the Indian-influenced Krishna Mandir and the Garuda-faced little two-tiered temple Narayan Mandir.
An opening to the left contains an insignificant little two-tiered shrine known as Umamaheswar temple with inside a beautiful image of Siva and Parvati carved on black stone (x century).

A few hundred metres beyond, a turning to the left leads to Kumbheswar temple (Shiva) (1392) the oldest and tallest in the city. With its magnificent five tiers of diminishing roofs it is similar to Nyatapola temple in Bhaktapur. In the courtyard there are various statues and sculptures. On the western side the Konti-hiti a tank where local women usually gather.

South Patan: Maha Baudha and Rato Machhendra Nath.
Mahabouddha the temple of the Thousand Buddha’s is an exact copy of the temple of Bodhgaya in India, although significantly smaller than the 90 m original. It takes its name from the thousands images of Buddha engraved in the terracotta tiles with which it is covered. This shikhara-style temple is located in a narrow irregular courtyard that must have been a monastery. After the 1934 earthquake the temple has been totally rebuilt and the original leftover tiles has been used to construct a small shikhara shrine.

Now we enter the area of the metalworkers with coppersmiths beating out various brass and copper ware.
Dedicated to the god of rain and plenty the temple of Rato (red) Machhendra Nath (1673) is one of the most popular temples in Patan. Enclosed in a courtyard it is a beautiful three-tiered temple, with metal-covered roofs bordered with wind bells. Each entrance has intricately carved doorways guarded by a pair of animals and the plinth is enclosed with a wall of prayer wheels. The fine carved struts represent Avalokiteswara with beneath scenes of torture. On the northern side on top of pillars there are various animals symbols of the Tibetan calendar.
