Aluvihara cave temples
Where Tripitakas Buddhist sacred texts were written
The monastery of Aluvihara (near Matale), is of great significance for Theravada Buddhism: the Buddhist canon Tripitakaya, or “Three Baskets” (29 -17 B.C.), were written down on ola leaves in Pali by a conclave of Buddhist monks in the Aluvihara Temple. There is no evidence that the Tripitakaya canon contains the authentic words of the historical Buddha: however it has inspired the Buddhist faith for over two thousand years. Today of the original caves only three are remaining linked by flights of steps and narrow paths between a jumble of boulders, result of a primitive massive landslide detached from the great mountain above.

Cave 1 (the image house), the cave entrance has a makara torana with Brahma riding his goose and Indra riding his elephant. Brahma and Indra are the two gods who accompany Buddha as he preaches in heaven. It is interesting to note the painting of the four great Himalayan rivers flowing from the mouth of a lion, elephant, horse and a ox and circling seven times before flowing to the four cardinal directions.
Inside both seated, standing and recumbent Buddha statues of terra-cotta, while the murals are adorned with paintings of Jataka stories. The cave ceilings are studded with fascinating paintings of lotus flowers in full bloom - all dating back to the Kandyan period.

Cave 2 conceals another large sleeping Buddha and various wall paintings of hell and a ‘Horror chamber’ with the various forms of punishment handed out by the devils to the sinners in the after-life. A few of thirty-two capital punishments are shown in sculpture inflicted on the criminals by the last King Sri Vicrama Rajasinghe known as the cruel king in Sri Lankan.
Cave 3 set amidst rock boulders is where the Tripitakayas were written on ola leaves by the ancient Buddhist monks as indicated on the cave in Sinhala.
A statue of the great Indian Buddhist scholar Buddhaghosa stands outside in a gardened area. From here, a flight of steps leads up, past a bo tree, and leads to the very top of the complex with a white dagoba, the terrace offers fine views of the surroundings.
