Located amidst a forest under the jagged cliffs in the ravine of the Yantra River, 6 km north from
Veliko Tarnovo, the monastery was founded in the xiv century. During Turkish domination it was burnt to ashes and in 1825 it was restored in its current location. Its buildings rise around a rectangular paved court, shaded by old pergolas.
The famous Samokov iconographer Zahari Zograf had painted the main Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (Preobrazhenie Preobrajenski Preobrazhenski church). he also painted the large icons of the wood carved iconostasis. The
‘Day of Judgement’ mural painting covers the whole eastern wall of the church porch and is one of the masterpieces of the Bulgarian national revival arts. The
‘wheel of life’ is one of the most popular murals and it is painted on the outside of the church.
In 1991, a large boulder fell from the cliff above and broke into smaller pieces that miraculously ended up on either side of the central church.
Today, the monastery is functional, and few monks reside there.
