Inca Trail: Aguas Calientes

Today known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, the small town in the valley below the ruins was known as Aguas Calientes until the late 1990s when it was decided that the name should be changed to that of the ruins. It is a fun small place, a quaint forest outpost booming from all the tourist activity around the train stop and the springs of sulphurous thermal waters. The town is located in an incredibly beautiful area, surrounded by jungle-covered mountains and next to the wonderful Urubamba River. The town itself is not particularly attractive, although it is quite interesting, mainly due to the railway line. There are no cars in the town, apart from the buses to shuttle visitors up to the ruins, and so the ‘main street’ is in fact the railway line featuring a long series of pubs and restaurants filled with visitors from all over the world and an enormous amount of stalls selling all kinds of handicrafts and hand-made products spreading all over around the train track. People wander up and down the track, jumping across the platform of the station, and there are even a some fruit sellers next to the line. When a train comes, the bustle on the platform, which is the main street’s pavement, is wonderful.

To return to Cusco there are local trains at moderate price and very expensive tourist trains. Our solution was to take the first train in the morning (a cheaper local one) to Ollantaytambo where we stopped for the visit of the ruins. The railway line runs parallel to the river in winding loops that follow the riverbed. From here one can see the typical vegetation of the upper jungle and the snow capped peak of the "Veronica" that with a height of 5,750 masl, it is the highest peak in the Urubamba range.
