Monasterio de Santa Catalina
The Convent of Santa Catalina de Sena was built in 1580 and probably is the biggest convent in the world. 450 nuns lived there for more than 400 years, totally cut off the outer world. Santa Catalina wrapped itself in mystery and silence until 1970 when a big part of the convent was beautifully renovated and opened for the public. In the north area of the complex there are still nuns living in the sector that is closed for the public. Pope Juan Pablo II visited this monastery in 1985 in occasion of the beatification of Sor Ana de Los Angeles Monteagudo.
This immense convent is a city within a city. From outside solid sillar walls surround all the block with the belfry tower facing the streets; the entrance portico is adorned with a relief of Sr. Catherine of Siena, who patronized the convent. 
The sober simplicity of the frontispiece contrasts with the inner streets full of colourful flowers and walls painted in fresh tints. Once inside you are immediately thrown into a colourful maze of narrow cobbled streets, brightly painted cloisters and small plazas bedecked with pots of geraniums.

The Claustro del Calvario (Cloister of the oranges) characterised by sky blue walls against white colonnades, the three crosses in the middle are the setting for the Passion of Christ that the nuns represent every Good Friday.

The Silence Yard with red ochre walls against piercing blue sky.
The Main cloister with the red colonnades is the largest in the monastery, around it frescos of life of Jesus and St. Mary.

Decorated with a fountain Zocodover Square from the Arab word "Zoco", meaning exchange or barter, where the nuns used to exchange fabrics and other objects made by themselves. From this point you can appreciate the dome of the church of the Monastery with a half orange dome reconstructed several times because of the diverse earthquakes.
A beautiful and old museum, mainly of religious themes found during the restoration of the monastery, it comprises samples of Peruvian painting during the viceroyalty and a collection of paintings of the so-called Cusco School.
