The salt mines of Maras

At a height of 3,380 masl, in a place where none would expect, we find the salt mines of Maras. Arriving from the road the scenery is really surprising, located on a wide-open hill above the Urubamba Valley, hundreds of white basins dazzles under the sun. The salt is concentrated in big quantities inside the mountain and it is slowly dissolved by the warm waters of an underground stream, when the salty water emerge it is distributed along an infinity of small channels and basins where the water evaporate leaving the salt crystals, people and mules loaded with sacks carry the salt on foot up to the depot on the ridge of the hill. The Incas mined salt from here centuries ago, and a local salt cooperative works the site today using the same manual process that their ancestors have used for dozens of generations.
