Leaving Castelvetrano the road runs through olive-groves and vineyards with a slow descent toward the sea. In a magnificent position on a promontory leaning on the sea of Africa, protected from a park Selinunte is one of the most important archaeological park that for extension is among the greatest of the whole Mediterranean area and testify of the meeting in Sicily of the two great Greek and Phoenician-Punic civilizations.
Founded in the VIII c. b.C by the Doric Greek colonies of Megara Iblea, near Augusta, the city immediately became rich and powerful. Subsequently it is destroyed in the 250 a.C by the Carthaginians during the First Punic war. In the centuries that follow buried in the sand and vegetation of Selinunte also the name is lost. Only at the beginning of the 800 during various excavation campaigns an extraordinary urban plant is brought to light.

The ancient Selinunte is divided in three separate areas:
The eastern main sacred area. Here we found: the temple E (reconstructed) (v c. bC) of purest Doric style dedicated to Hera, the small temple F and the temple G, this last one, dedicated to Apollo, is one of the greatest sacred buildings of the antiquity, it appears like a cumulus of gigantic ruins with only two standing columns raised at the beginning of the '800.
The acropolis entirely surrounded by an imposing system of fortifications, a long paved road (the plateia) passes near the temple C, dedicated to Demeter the most ancient and partly reconstructed.
Along the ancient Selinon river bed, the other sacred area the sanctuary of the Malophoros ("the one who brings the pomegranate"), identifiable with goddess Demeter.
