The beaches, the sea and the islands in Sicily
The roughly 1,000 km-long Sicilian coastline, although largely spoiled by ugly constructions, combines varied sea landscapes, archaeological and historical sites.
Catania shoreline stretches out along nine kilometres of sandy beach with the environmental gem of the Simeto River’s mouth, a protected marsh area wintering place for migratory birds. Along the city waterfront the old sulphur refineries known as Le Ciminiere (the chimneys) abandoned since long time have now been restored and converted to venue for cultural events, loosing unfortunately much of their industrial archaeology feeling. Further on the small fishing village of San Giovanni Licuti, now sadly swallowed by the growth of the city, can still let you imagine how may appear this part of the Sicilian coast. Nearby two interesting coastal watchtowers from the Norman times built in black lava stones. Further on Ognina, another fishing village built on a small fiord that used to give shelter to fishermen boats, very much ruined by the city development.
From here it starts a very interesting stretch of coast of about 20 km characterized by the lava from Etna. These laves are the eruptive layer that, from the central crater, sinks into the sea from the east slope of the mountain, with a complex system of overlapping layers of lava of various epochs forming faults and staircases. Patches of evergreen Mediterranean maquis and of ‘ficodindia’ (prickle pear) colonize this rocky coast of grey ancient laves and blue cobalt sea, giving the landscape a particular and unique aspect.
The coast is dotted with beautiful fishing villages, like: Aci Castello with its Norman castle sitting atop a lava cliff dominating the sea, Aci Trezza with its ‘faraglioni’ and the Lachea island, huge black lava rocks rising out from the blue sea, Acireale a big town famous for its beautiful baroque architecture; Santa Maria la Scala and Santa Tecla are other fishing villages set on the beautiful coast stretch called ‘la timpa’. Very sadly this unique environment has been almost entirely wiped out by the development and only ‘La Timpa’, the farthest stretch nearby Acireale, has maintained its original scenic appeal.

The famous coast of Taormina offers some impressive spots, from the sandy shore along Giardini town the beautiful view of Monte Tauro and Taormina itself; then the Isola Bella in between Capo Taormina and Capo Sant’Andrea in crystal blue waters and a beautiful environment.

Along the Thyrrenian coast, stand the impressive Capo Tindari dominating a tremendous sea landscape and with archaeological site. Cefalů nestled down the slopes of a limestone promontory offers particularly attractive scenery of a maze of narrow streets lined with picturesque stone-houses overlooking the sea.

Zingaro nature reserve


Trapani coastline is certainly one of the richest: Scopello, with its ‘baglio’ (farm) and the ancient tuna-fishery restored by the Arabs. The Zingaro nature reserve a unique unspoilt coastline and sea floors with interesting flora and fauna. The Monte Cofano. The Marsala Stagnone Lagoon natural reserve, a small archipelago with its characteristic salt-plans and wind mills, and the ancient Phoenician island of Mozia, renowned archaeological site.

The Ragusan seashore features low cliffs where carob-groves and vineyards alternate with sandy beaches most of them spoiled by ugly tourism resorts. Among the least spoiled places there are Camarina, now protected by the archaeological park. Sampieri beach with an amazing ruined building, a former tiles factory destroyed by fire, known as ‘u stabilimientu abbruciatu’ (the burnt factory). Pozzallo, the only coastal town of the area, with ancient sailing traditions, grown around a watch-tower, the Torre Cabrera, xv sec., recently badly restored.

Vendicari marshes


Few kilometers north of Pachino, in the Syracuse coast, the beautiful Vendicari marshes nature reserve, with the so-called Torre Sveva, xv sec, and the chimney of the ruins of the ‘tonnara’ (tuna-fishery) nearby the vestiges of an ancient Greek ‘garum’ and fish salting plant.

The beautiful Pelagian archipelago: Lampedusa island, with a unique landscape like the Rabbit island. Linosa Island, known as the “black pearl of Sicily” due to its volcanic origin, with uncontaminated environments and seabeds.
