Sicilian walks
Walking across Sicily is a journey through time and space. A unique cultural Mediterranean crossroad with diverse natural environments. The magnificent mount Etna, which black lava has even reached the blue sea and with extraordinary lava-stone houses built on its slopes. Spectacular coastline stretches covered in lush Mediterranean vegetation. Hidden valleys among rugged mountain ranges. Poor, almost forgotten villages with beautiful little churches. Castles and ‘masserie’, the Sicilian farmhouses. Our images are only a small taste of what Sicily has to offer in the way of walking.
Etna - The most important natural attraction which dominates southern and eastern Sicily. In many parts, the Etna has wide slopes and is easy to walk on. If you pay attention not to get lost in the endless scenery of gravel, lava and debris trekking is a very good way to get to know the mountain a little better. ‘Monte Nero degli Zappini’ - This is an easy walk that can be done without a guide. The path starts near the Grande Albergo on the road from Nicolosi and it offers a sample of some of the most interesting natural environments of the area: ancient and recent lava fields, hornitos, natural and artificial woods.

Pantalica and the Anapo river Gorge A spectacular limestone gorge carved out by the rivers Anapo and Calcinara on their path through the white soft calcareous rocks of Monti Iblei to the west of Syracuse. This is the site of archaeological remains of the ancient kingdom of the Sikels, one of the original Sicilian peoples who left 5,000 Neolithic tombs hewn into canyon walls.
There are several possible walks. The old railway that runs along the floor of the gorge - (the 1950s Syracuse –Vizzini railway). The path passes through lush Mediterranean maquis and orange orchards.
From the small town of Ferla a road takes you to the archaeological site at the rim of the gorge, from here you start the walk along a rough track leading to the so-called Anaktoron On your way you will pass numerous rock tombs and cave-dwellings. With fairly gentle descent one reaches the floor of the canyon where the river Calcinara joins the Anapo. Here you can cross the Anapo by stepping stones and after crossing the river bed you can climb the other side (the original plan for the Ferla road was to span the gorge and continue to Sortino town).

Cava Grande di Cassibile From Avola a road leads into the Cava Grande del Cassibile nature reserve in the Iblei Mountain, the karst range dominating the southeast part of Sicily. At the end of the road, you get to the view point Belvedere. It takes half an hour to walk down to the 250 m deep gorge where the river Cassibile makes a succession of natural rock pools connected by tiny water falls.

Zingaro reserve On the rugged cape in the north coast, the Zingaro reserve was the first nature reserve in Sicily. The reserve can only be visited on foot. A little way beyond Scopello, a small fishing village, the road ends in a the car park. The reserve is accessed through a tunnel. The rough track ascends and descends the mountainside as it follows the shore line, eventually rounding the cape and finishing at the resort of S. Vito Lo Capo, passing tiny bays and coves accessible only by sea. Characteristic are the dwarf palms.

Vendicari Natural Reserve
Located nearby Noto the Vendicari Natural Reserve is a large strip of marshy coastline, a protected habitat for migratory birds. The environment is intact and various: cliffs, creeks, dunes, one of the most beautiful coast line of Sicily with an Aragonese tower and an ancient Ellenic tonnara (tuna fishing works). Flora consists mainly of rock and sand-loving vegetation like the dwarf palm and the prickly-pear. From the entrance of the natural preserve at Pantano Grande you can walk along the beautiful coast up to Eloro, some kilometers north (in fact following the route of the ancient Roman Via Elorina which linked Syracuse with its coastal colonies at Eloro and Camarina). You eventually reach a tiny hidden bay at Calamosche, and can continue all the way to Eloro if you wade across the river Tellaro.

The walk of the "Chiazzette" in the natural reserve of the Timpa of Acireale. The ancient Spanish path of the ‘600 that through the 'timpa' it goes down to the sea of S. Maria la Scala. This pedestrian panoramic path represented for a lot of time the only communication between Acireale and Saint Maria la Scala. The fort of 'Il Tocco', situated per second hairpin of the path, it was endowed with a gun that warned the citizens of the arrival of hostile ships. Before reaching Saint Maria la Scala the path goes down to the sea shore crossing inlets of black lava pebbles.
