With a one hour tuk-tuk ride from Tangalla, crossing the beautiful Sri Lankan country side, we reached the little visited Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary one of the oldest of Sri Lanka. The sanctuary is a wetland with two salty lagoons, mangrove swamps and open areas with pockets of scrub jungles.
The Park is a very important site for migrant shorebird and is quite famous for its flamingoes, Black Capped Purple Kingfisher (not seen). We spotted many other migratory birds: the Asian Open Bill stork, Painted stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Purple Swamp Hen, Glossy Ibis, Common Snipe, Black Winged Stilt, Purple Heron, Black-headed Ibis, Lesser Whistling Ducks, the common Indian Pond Heron and other frequently seen water birds. And finally the memorable sight of a peacock (or, more precisely, the Indian peafowl) perched in a tree branch.

We combined the trip to Kalametiya with the visit to the mysteriously barren landscape at Ussangoda, around 5km east. This large, flat plateau (claimed in legend as a landing place of Rawana) is characteristic for its brick-coloured soil. The plateau is bordered to the south by sheer cliffs which drop to a fine sweep of beach, regularly visited by turtles, and to a fishing village.
Also here we had the occasion to spot some birds common of the bushes and grass fields like: larks, Black-throated Munia a small passerine bird, Red-wattled Lapwing fairly commonly in fields, the Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Sri Lanka's national bird, Blue-Tailed Bee-eater, bar-winged Flycatcher, Black Bulbul, the common Collared Dove. In the rice fields nearby, among thousand Cattle Egrets, the Brahminy Kite.
