Mulkirigala cave temples.

The ‘Little Sigiriya’ of the South

The cave temple of Mulkirigala are the South Coast rival of the temples of the Cultural Triangle. Reached in 25 minutes tuk-tuk journey from Tangalle, the temples are carved out at the of a huge rock outcrop which rises for over two hundred metres out of the surrounding palm forests. The site date back to the third century BC, but the caves were completely restored during the eighteenth century.

After the entrance gate a short flight of steps leads to the ticket office, at its left there is the first terrace with two cave temples and a small dagoba standing on elephant feet together with strange oil lamps (xx c).
The first cave contains a reclining Buddha and paintings of Vishnu, Kataragama, the demonic blue Vibhishana and pictures of arhats (enlightened Buddhist monks).
The second cave has beautiful Kandyan-style paintings of Jataka stories (restored in the xviii c).

Back to the ticket office a flight of steps leads up to the second terrace, here there is a cave which houses a reclining Buddha flanked by two disciples.

Further steps lead up to the third terrace with a small rock pool at the far end, here four cave temples are arranged side by side.
The first cave, the smallest of the four immediately behind the pool, is called Naga Viharaya or Cobra temple, after the snake painted on a small door at the rear.
The second cave (Aluth Viharaya) sports a garish reclining Buddha.
The third cave (Raja Mahavihara) holds yet another reclining Buddha with intricately decorated feet.
The fourth cave (Piriven Viharaya) has a reclining Buddha in the true parinirvana mudra, uncommon for Sri Lanka where the majority of reclining Buddha’s are rather shown in a "sleeping pose" distinguished by the open eyes and the aligned toes of the two feet. The wall before the entrance of cave four has a Kandyan style red/white/black painting where I noted the scene of a Bodhisattva donating an eye.

Steep rock-cut steps lead up to terrace four, at the very summit of the site. Here there is a bo-tree grown from cuttings taken from the famous tree at Anuradhapura. A white dagoba is at the top of the ridge.
