Catania
The city
At the foot of Etna, Catania is the second largest and one of the most historic cities of Sicily. This baroque city, with a remarkable Mediterranean flavour, shows to whom that adventures in its traffic jammed streets its fascinating mix of traditions, colours and beautiful buildings. It was completely rebuilt in baroque style after the big 1693 earthquake, which completely destroyed the city. Piazza del Duomo hub of the urban plan, with the baroque Cathedral (Duomo). A great architectural treasure of the city is the magnificent Biscari Palace (xviii century), the largest of the aristocratic dwellings with a lavishly decorated facade. Built along the 160 metres of the defensive walls erected in the xvi century by the Spaniards it dominates the "marina". The Ursino Castle (xiii century) erected by Frederic II of Swabia on a promontory overhanging the sea, with a majestic square-plan and cylindrical corner towers and surrounded by a large ditch. The lava, during the 1669 eruption, filled up the ditch moving the castle away from the sea for hundreds of metres. At the end of Via Garibaldi there is Porta Garibaldi, a triumphal arch erected for the weeding between Ferdinand IV of Sicily and Maria Carolina of Austria that used to mark the end of the city, the black lava stone contrast with the white limestone of Syracuse.

 Piazza Dante with an exedra plan, a perfect match for the Benedictine convent, a magnificent eighteenth-century building with the façade decorated with pilasters and ashlars and the nearby church of San Nicolò all'Arena, one of the biggest churches in Sicily. Completely destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, the renovation works, carried out in the xviii century, were never finished and the church today has a suggestive unfinished façade. Located in the slope of the hill of the ancient acropolis the baths of the Rotunda, formed by dome-covered rooms in quite good condition, in Byzantine age, (i century AD) the room was turned into a church; the Roman Theatre and Odeon now completely surrounded by city buildings. Of Greek origins the theatre was rebuilt in roman times; today there are still remains of the vaulted corridors made of lava stone, the central part of the cavea and part of the orchestra with a marble floor.

The Baroque language of Piazza Duomo continues along Via Etnea flanked by the baroque façades of patrician palaces, typical expression of Catania architecture. The University Square (xviii century) with aristocratic facades, the Collegiata Church (Santa Maria dell'Elemosina), with a marvellous baroque façade animated by its triple convexity, the Four Corners crossroad with the San Demetrio Palace.

The ancient roman amphitheatre, one of the greatest in Italy. Its lava blocks were used by the Normans to build the Duomo and nowadays there is not much left of the original structure. From the central Piazza Stesicoro with the neighbour church of San Biagio as background parts of it can still be seen: the northern entrance, the arena, the podium and a series of barrel-vaults. Behind the amphitheatre, the ruins of the church of Sant'Euplio, the church was entirely destroyed by the aerial bombardment of the WWII. Some years ago, in memory of this disappeared church, images of the apostles have been posted in the wall. Inside the area a stair conducts to an underground sepulchre with wall frescos, part of the ancient Roman necropolises located to east of the amphitheatre. Villa Bellini public garden, once property of the aristocratic Biscari family . The oldest part of the garden was landscaped in the eighteenth century by the prince of Biscari.

Among modern Catania monuments. there is the beautiful Proserpine Fountain, near the railway station (xx century). The ‘Ciminiere’ the ancient sulphur refineries now an exhibition centre, an example of industrial archaeology. The activity ended after the WWII and for a long time the place remained abandoned, until recently when renovation works have been done; unfortunately little is left of the former atmosphere.

Markets and craft - the colours of Catania
The "Fiera" in Carlo Alberto square (once called the "Monday Fair" because it was held only on that day) and the"Pescheria" or Fish Market behind the Amenano Fountain. The daily "show" of the bargaining between the buyers and the sellers is a mixture of smells, flavors, colors, sounds, with the big square umbrellas which protect the stalls from the rays of the sun. But there are many other small fish markets, like the one at San Giovanni Li Cuti or at small harbour of Ognina.
Food in Catania is bright and colored. The old-fashioned little restaurants bars and stalls in all the street of the old town centre.
The "Opera dei pupi", the Sicilian puppet theatre, an ancient tradition still kept alive The puppets themselves, with their gold and silver armour and bright plumes, are on sale in the souvenir shops.
