Catania

The coast

Characterized by the lava that reached the sea several times over the centuries this tract of the shoreline is unique, it is the black lava rock that determine its beauty with its strange formations and the deep black colour that dip into the ultramarine blue of the Mediterranean. Fishing hamlets nested in the small bays used to interrupts a luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation and the immense orange gardens that from the slopes of the Etna arrived till the sea, mixing the fragrance of the “zagara” to the smell of the sea. The wild urban development has completely spoiled this beautiful stretch of Sicilian coast, today almost nothing remains after decades of barbaric exploitation; only the imagination can help us to recognize the used beauty. The hamlet of San Giovanni Li Cuti, now submerged by gigantic buildings, used to be a tiny sea hamlet of fishermen, its typical simple houses can still be seen, and, on the shore, colourful fishing boats. Following the rocky coast we reach Ognina with its small harbour, the church dedicated to the virgin used to be at the end of a small fiord now jumped by an ugly road bridge. The place still has the flavour of the past with shops and stalls selling fish and sea fruits.

From here begins the so called Riviera dei Ciclopi with the two jewels of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza.
Aci Castello developed around the Norman castle (xi century). The castle built of lava rock was originally connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. The poresent day castle is the reconstruction done between 1071 and 1081 with the splendid pointed arches of the Norman military architecture.
Aci Trezza a lively fishing village with the ‘faraglioni’ or Isles of the Cyclops, of which the largest is called Lachea Island, these basaltic rocks were hurled into the sea by the blinded giant Polyphemus in his pursuit of Ulysses.
Acireale rebuild in baroque style after 1693 earthquake the city features splendid Baroque architecture, to be seen especially in the Town Hall, the Cathedral and in the churches of Saints Peter and Paul and of Saint Sebastian. The aristocratic palaces are also interesting. From here starts the rim of the ‘Timpa’ (now protected by a reserve), a cliff sloping down to the sea, green with luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation. At the foot of the cliff are the picturesque fishing villages of Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla.

Going southwards after the lively harbour we find 'la plaja' an incredible long stretch of golden sand beach backed with pinewoods. After few kilometres we reach the remains of an ancient and wide swamp formed by the mouth of the river Simeto now protected by the Natural Preserve, after a long struggle fought by the environmentalist associations to save the area from unauthorized building that every where has spoiled the coast and the thick pinewood. The mouth of the river today flows in a channel but what remains of the old mouth has formed a swamp area used by wintering and migrating birds. Along the waterline, the precious amber of Simeto can still be found.
