Descriptions made by travellers from the past portray Mòdica as a town wrenched from the rock because of its caves, inhabited until a few decades ago, for its steps and for its geographical position. Located to the south of the Iblei mountains, Modica is a lovely city. It is divided into Modica Alta (Higher Modica), whose stone houses nestle on a hill slope on which the Castle stood, and Modica Bassa (Lower Modica) lying down in the valley where once flown two rivers now covered by the Corso Umberto, the city’s main thoroughfare bordered by old shops, houses and buildings.
Called also the town of the one hundred churches Modica has plenty of beautiful churches that give to the city the typical baroque look of the other cities in the South-Eastern Sicily that were highly damaged or completely destroyed by the terrible earthquake in 1693. Very little remain of the ancient city, anyhow a large number of historical palazzi, churches and convents testify the power of Modica at the time of the feudalism in Sicily.

On the main street of Modica Bassa in front of the historical Jewish quarter stands the Saint Peter and Paul Church, (xvii century) dedicated to the patron saint of Modica Bassa . It has an elegant flight of steps flanked by statues of the twelve apostles, the so-called Santoni. Its late-baroque façade bears four statues of the Virgin Mary, Saint Peter, Saint Cataldo and Saint Rosalie.

The magnificent flight of 250 steps, which starts down from Corso Garibaldi, leads us to the sumptuous façade of San Giorgio church in an impressive combination of architecture, spectacle and urban design. Surmounted by the bell-tower, the imposing baroque façade is divided into three architectonic orders. Built on the site of a little church dedicated to the Holy Cross and destroyed by the Arabs in 845, reconstructed after the earthquake in 1693, the cathedral is one of the most important and impressing religious monuments in all Sicily.

In the picturesque maze of narrow streets of Modica Alta we also find the Cathedral of San Giovanni, at the top of a beautiful flight of steps, and some attractive buildings like the Palazzo Tomasi-Rossi, with stone portal and beautiful balconies of Baroque style.
Descending towards Modica Bassa we find the Castle, (xviii century tower and a more recent clock), and the birthplace of Salvatore Quasimodo, the xx century writer and 1959’s Nobel Prize.
