Eastern Anatolian, where the Pontus and Taurus Mountains converge, is a rugged country with higher elevations. Mount Ararat is located in this area. Many of the peaks are extinct volcanoes that have been active in the recent past, as evidenced by widespread lava flows. vast stretches of this eastern region consist only of wild or barren wasteland harsh climate and scarce population. This region s controversially known as Kurdistan and for the centenary fight of the Kurds people for their autonomy. In fact Ararat region has always been the centre if the Kurds rebellions.
More southerly the fertile Malatya plain is famous for its apricot growing. This important town has a nice and original bazaar with copper artisans working along the street borders.
Situated 1719 masl in the midst of rocky mountains and volcanic formations Van Lake is the largest lake in Turkey, a green, fertile oasis in a desert surroundings. On a small island of Lake Van the x c church of Holy Cross of Akdamar island one the most sublime examples of Armenian religious architecture.
The Çavustepe Urartian site of Hosap castle and Ishak Pasha Palace built atop a rocky outcrop by a local Kurdish leaders are evidences of the rich historical past of the area.
