Byzantine period
The early Byzantine architecture: the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) built between 532 and 537, is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. The Chora Church Istanbul (Church of the Holy Saviour in the Country) (Kariye Camii, or Kariye Kilisesi ) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church after the Byzantines took Constantinople back in 1261.

Ottoman period
Turkish architecture reached its peak during the Ottoman period. Influenced by Seljuk, Byzantine and Arab architecture, Ottoman architecture came to develop a style all of its own. This architectural style reached its classical form after the conquest of Bisanzio, when the domed mosque with fluted minaret culminated in the construction of the great mosques of Istanbul by the master architect of the classical period, Mimar Sinan, the Süleymaniye Mosque and surrounding complex, is among Sinan's most renowned works. During the years 1720-1890, Ottoman art deviated from the principles of classical times. In the 18th century, during the Lale (Tulip) period, Ottoman art came under the influence of the excessive decorations of the west; Baroque, Rococo. Fountains became the characteristic structures of this period. Examples in Neoclassical, Baroque and Rococo styles, or a mixture of all three, are the Dolmabahçe Palace, Dolmabahçe Mosque
