Bagan
In the reign of Anawrahtar
One of the most spectacular archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, comparable to Angkor, by the great number of temples, the area of Bagan still counts today more than 800 buildings out of the 5,000 which were originally constructed between the eleventh and fourteenth century in a semi arid landscape sparsely dotted with desert plant like tamarind, acacia and the neem tree.

Though Bagan's origins are in obscurity, the construction of temples began in the mid-11th century under the reign of Anawrahta, the most important king in the history of Bagan who under the Theravada Buddhist faith unified ethnic groups such as the Mon and the survivors of the Pyu in the mighty empire of Myanmar. Like in the celebrated Angkor Wat, Borobudur and other equally impressive structures that can be found in Blitar and Prambanan, the official Theravada Buddhism, melt with Mahayana and Brahmanism, produced the magnificent temples, stupas, mural paintings for which Bagan is famous. This powerful empire lasted for three hundred years until it was destroyed by the Mongol invasion of Kublai Khan in 1287 C.E. when the reign capital was moved to Ava. After all this invasions, earthquakes and floods much of the existing monuments temples and stupas have been restored, updated, repainted and ‘beautified’ over the years that much of their original character is lost.

For our long weekend in Bagan we have chosen to stay in the city's archaeological zone near to the walled old city, the core of the site, located on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River. To visit Bagan the first problem is the large area to be covered and the overwhelming number of temples. We divided the area in four large areas to be visited in more or less the three days at our disposal:
- Ananda temple, the Old Bagan and the Minkaba area
- The central and south plain
- Shwezigon pagoda and the north area
