Defined as the most national of all Burma's pagodas, for many Burmese people Shwezigon is the objective of a pilgrimage to Pagan. Shwezigon remains to this days a growing monument, its precincts are littered with shrines and 'zayat', the result of the various donation offered by pious earners of merit and accumulated over the centuries.
Built in the 11th century the Shwezigon retains its original shape and has served as the prototype for later Burmese pagodas: three terraces risig seeply to an intermediate octagonal base from which the bell shaped dome rises.

On the four sides stairways with 'makara' balustrades provide access to the terraces, the uppermost of which has small stupas at the corners direct copy of the main stupa. In addition, there are smaller stupas in the shape of kalasa pots at the corners of the lower three terraces. Bicorporate lions guard the corners at the base of the lowermost terrace. Above the dome rises a ringed conical spire, which has an intervening double lotus before ending in an ovoid finial. A 'hti' or umbrella, symbol of sovereignty, crowns the structure.

All round the stupa, branches covered with golden leaves jingling when the wind blows remind the believers of the holiness of the place.
Ancillary temples called ‘perfumed chambers’ stand at the four sides of the pagoda, each shrine houses a 4m standing bronze Buddha image, all in the same 'vitarkamudra': 'Kakusanda' (North), 'Konagamana' (East), 'Kassapa' (South) and' Gautama' (West). This arrangement of one standing image at each of the cardinal points is the symbolic representation of the cosmic succession of Buddhas through the present era (kalpa) and it heralds the smilar arrangement of the Ananda temple.

The Shwezigon precinct is full of numerous images, bells, stone inscriptions and other paraphernalia. As you wander around, you see various shrines and 'tazaungs' (halls) around the pagoda compound.
Among the statuary present in the precinct there are the effiges of the Thirty seven Nats (pre-Buddhist ‘protecting spirit’ still worshiped by the people) in a modern unattractive building together with a stone image of 'Thagya min' (the hindu deity Indra) accepted in Burma as the king of the nats. This is the earliest known figure of Indra in Burma.
In another of these shelters you will find brightly coloured figures of Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha) and the characters he encountered when he was still a prince (the old man, the sick man and the dead man). The statues have an awkward shape and they may even look terrifying.
