The North Plain
Following the road that goes to Nyaung U
Out of Tharaba gate following the road that goes to Nyaung U, sights are ordered (more or less) west to east.
The Minochantha (also Minochanta) complex is on a raised platform with a small modern wooden shrine along its western face and impressive stupas, guarded by chinthe, the half-lion and half dragon from Hindu-Buddhist mythology. From the rear of the platform there is a wonderful lookout over part of the vast Bagan plain and its numerous stupas and temples, including the Ananda and Thatbinnyu.

Further on we stopped at a cluster of red brick temples near Min myaw yaza temple. Here two little boys helped us to climb to the terrace of one temple trough a stairway hidden in the temple wall.
The Upali Thein was used for the ordination ceremony of monks. Rectangular in plan, it seems to imitate Burmese wooden architecture. It has a long central nave with a ridge roof and a small central spire rising from the rooftop. Doorways on all four sides and two small perforated windows light the interioirs. Inside, two seated images of the Buddha are placed back to back separated by a common back slab. The paintings (18th century) show scenes from the life of Guatama Buddha.

On the other side of the road just West of Htilomino there is a cluster of red brick temples named Khaymingha on the map.
The red brick Htilominlo, ('Favored by the Umbrella, Favored by the King') is built in the likeness of the earlier Sulamani, though larger and with minor differences in ornament. It is a double-storeyed temple facing east with large arched doors that give it an open aspect. The vaulted corridor of the ground floor has 22 niches but stone Buddha images in them had been stolen. The middle corridor goes around the central structure reached via a hole at the top of a spiral staircase built in the thickness of the wall. Most of the murals within the temple have deteriorated beyond recognition. On the ground floor there are four Buddha images (further four are on upper storey). The area inside the temple precint is filled with vendor stalls.

Kubyauk-Gyi 'Great Colorful Cave' is the temple where some of its beautiful mural paintings were despoiled by a German treasure hunter in 1899. Naturalistically framed by palms its truncated pyramidal tower, resembling that of the Mahabodhi, sits above the rectangular body and short eastern vestibule, while away to the right the whitewashed pagoda with its glistening pinnacle rise at a higher elevation.
The mural paintings inside, lit by latticed false doorways, show mothifs of the 28 Buddhas, scenes from Gautama’s life, the 550 Jatakas and Mara’s attack. Several sections of the murals of the upper parts of the wall are now lost spirited away by a german treasure hunter. The vault bears a picture of a lotus pool symbolic of the creation of the universe supported by a lotus.
The Buddha statue at the back wall is constructed from brick, and the plaster covering has undergone the same fate as the inner walls. There are two alcoves on either side of the main hallway.

Across Anawrahta Rd, south of the Htilominlo, we find Buledi (nr 394) middle sized stupa great for its views, it so named after a gourd-like fruit on account of the bulbous shape of the crowning final. It is a steep-stepped, pyramidal stupa with medial stair flights, cutting up through the terraces. Just east of Buledi stupa No 405 with several glazed tiles.
