Inle Lake
Boat trip of the lake
One of the lake attractions are the markets that are scheduled to rotate every five days from one village to the other of the lake shores. On the day we took our boat trip the Nam Pan market, on the eastern lakeshore, was in full swing jammed of tourist and souvenir hawkers with some local farmers from the hills peddling vegetables in among the crowds.

In front of Nam Pan, on the other shore amidst stilt houses, there is Alodaw Pauk Pagoda one of the oldest shrines on the lake, built on stilts over the water.
Near Nampan there are several small cheroot factories, Inle Lake is particularly known for its flavored cheroots, a cigar distinctive to Myanmar, rolled with dried banana, pineapple, tamarind, honey and rice wine. The women of the lake are famous to hand-roll very quickly the famous cigars, and you will not miss the exhibition of their ability.
Another popular stop on the tourist circuit is one of the various weaving workshops. Particulary interesting are the multicoloured fabrics weaved with the silk extracted from from lotus stems.
In this part of the lake all the buildings are constructed on stilts, people travel around by canoe or cross the canals over bamboo walkways and bridges. Monasteries and stupas lies among floating islands made of weed and water hyacinth piled up and hardened, where people grow their vegetables.

Our boat now sails N-W along a canal to the village of Tha Ley with the the huge tiered pagoda Phaung Daw Oo Paya, the holiest religious site in the Shan State. Surrounded, as usual, by shops selling local merchandise the pagoda enshrines five small ancient Buddha images transformed into amorphous blobs by the sheer volume of gold leaf applied by devotees over the years.
During an annual festival the images are paraded around the lake in an impressive procession inside an ornate barge shaped like the mythical Hintha bird and towed by several boats of leg-rowers. The Hinta bird is a symbol of purity as it rests in the water with its feathers remaing dry. The Hintha is said to eat pearls, and is usually depicted with a pearl in its beak (the bird is adopted as symbol of the Mon people).

The boat now follows a narrow, foliage-cloaked canal winding through the reeds eastwards to the lakeside village of Inthein (Indein), the site of the famous Shwe Inn Thein Paya. The jungle now grows denser and denser on either side of the canal, when the village appears suddenly among the vegetation.
Our boatmen stopped us nearby the market, below minor crumbled pagodas on top of a rocky outcrop immediately behind the uninviting village. Rather then heading directely to the main pagoda we spent some time to visit this somehow atmospheric site. Choked in greenery there are numerous crumbling stupas where you can still discern ornate stucco carvings of animals, deva and chinthe, these are in some way more interesting than the ugly new ones rebuilt in concrete.
Following the main trougfare of the village we cross the canal with a bridge and follow the half km long covered stairway that climbs the hill flanked by stalls selling lacquerware, puppets and other souvenirs. Finally we reach at the top the Shwe Inn Thein Paya, a complex of 1054 weather-beaten zedi, most constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The site is by all means interesting although, as said before, some of the zedi have been reconstructed in lifeless concrete monstrosities by fervent tasteless local Buddhists.
