The 16th century Kakku pagoda complex was first seen by a westerner in 1996. Prior to this the Pa O people had kept this site hidden from the rest of the world, few have seen it since when Kakku was opened to foreigners in 2002.
On our way to Kakku we stopped at Taunggyi a busy trading post where we paied the entrance fee to the area and joined our Pa-O guide. Before leaving the town we visited on the outskirts south of town the white Sulamuni Paya, a facsimile of the Ananda in Bagan, worth visiting to have better views of the interiors than in the more famous original.

Arranged in neat rows sprawling over the hillside, the 2.478 stupas at Kakku are one of the most remarkable sights in Shan State. According to local legend, the stupa garden was founded by the Buddhist missionaries of the Indian emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. Legend says that the first stupas were created by King Alaungsithu the 12th century King of Bagan.

The stupas are built in a bewildering variety of styles, marking the prevailing architectural style at the time when they were constructed. Some are simple and unadorned while others are covered in a riot of stucco deities and mythical beasts. Among the tall Shan-style stupas are a number of small square ‘monastery style’ stupas that are unique to this region.
Like other ancient sites across the country, Kakku is slowly being restored and modernised using donations from pilgrims, still the stupa garden has a palpable sense of antiquity. Also here the pagoda compound is surrounded by a holy forest of huge Banyan trees.
