The vast Inle lake, 900 metres above sea-level, in the Shan State near the border with Thailand, surrounded by mountains is a beautiful tourist destination.
This is the ‘land’ of the Intha, ‘the Son of the Lake’, the descendants of people who migrated in the 14th century from southern Myanmar to escape incessant wars. Here they obtained by the king of Nyaungshwe the permission to settle only on the lake shore, with the possibility to ‘cultivate’ only the water and creating so the landscape of stilts and floating islands of vegetation that makes beautiful this lake.

The main attraction is of course the lake that can be comfortably visited in one day by a boat trip arranged by your hotel. One of the highlight of the tour is the picturesque pagoda of Indein, a cluster of hundreds of ancient stupas overgrown with bushes on the summit of a hill.

Near Nyaung Shwe, the capital town of Inle Lake, do not miss the Shwe Yaunghwe Kyaung a unique teak monastery famous for the oval windows of the ancient ordination hall. In the precint there is also a hall with the inner walls decorated by glass mosaics and thousands of small Buddha statues donated by local and foregin pilgrims.

Other attraction in the lake area is the spectacular ancient wonderful pagoda of Kakku, a forest of over 2.000 stupas with origins dating back many centuries. The pagoda lies south from Taunggyi, the capital town of Shan State, and can be reached with a full day car ride arranged by your hotel.

Also in the area, reached with a long day car jurney, there is the spectacular Pindaya cave. Perched on a limestone wall, the ancient Shwe U Min cave is filled with thousands of Buddha images in various sizes and shapes collected over the centuries.
