There are several ‘Golden Cave’ pagodas in Shan State, but the famous Pindaya’s Shwe Oo Min pagoda is by far the most impressive. The Pindaya’s Cave pagoda is a massive limestone cavern filled with thousands of gilded Buddha statues donated over the centuries by fervent Buddhist worshippers.

On the way to the village of Pindaya you will cross densely farmed areas until you reach the base of the rock face where several covered stairways climb the hill up to the cave entrance, set high on a limestone ridge.
The car will follow the road up to the beginning of the main stairway at the base of a lift, sparing you a long climb. Here there is the fancy statue of a giant spider, an evil nat that imprisoned seven princesses in the cave, being killed by a prince with an arrow.

The site is a complex of dark natural caves and tunnels filled with Buddha images in an astonishing variety of shapes, sizes and materials, many gaudily daubed with gold paint. At the latest count, the caves contained more than 8.700 statues, left from centuries by Burmese pilgrims, others are newly installed by Buddhists from as far afield as Singapore, the Netherlands and the USA.
The collection of alabaster, teak, marble, brick, lacquer and cement images is still growing. Pilgrims arrive installing new images and meditating in tiny meditation chambers formed by natural cavities in the cave walls. Before leaving do not miss to give a last look the the holy forest of huge banyan tree at the base of the hill.
