Located about two miles south from the Mandalay city centre the Mahamuni Pagoda contains the much venerated Mahamuni image, a bronze statue of sitting Buddha brought here from the Rakthine State in 1784.

The legend wants that the statue was cast in the lifetime of Lord Buddha while the Buddha himself looked on, but so many gold leafs have been placed by devotees over several centuries that it has lost the shape, it is estimated that the gold leaf covering is 7 inches thick. Its crown is decorated with diamonds, rubies and sapphires and every morning at 4:30 am a team of monks washes the face and brushes the teeth of the statue with sandalwood and camphor water, a ritual practice most probably carried out from the Rakhaing days.

In the pagoda compound there are other images revered by the pilgrims, nearby the northern exit passage six Khmer bronze statues, found at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, are housed and displayed: two human figures, three stylized lions and one representation of a giant three-headed elephant. Many people come here to rub their bodies against the human statues with the hope to heal their corresponding part of the body.

While Myanmar boys are novitiated, the girls also have an important Ear-piercing Ceremony in which their ear lobes are pierced so they can wear ear-rings when they come of age. This ceremony of young girls usually coincides with the boys’s novitiate rather than being held on its own. On the day of the novitiate ceremony, the girl’s ritual is held before the novitiate so they can join the procession.
On the way out we notice the mural paintings on the wall of the outer cloister.
