the main gateway to Myanmar with greatest pagoda of the world
A morning stroll
A short taxi ride from our hotel and we are at the 2000-year-old Sule Paya, surrounded by small shops and put inside a gigantic roundabout, the geographic and commercial centre of the grid street pattern designed by the British. Left alone the largely unremarkable pagoda we directed to Mahabandoola Garden with in its centre the Independence Monument, an obelisk surrounded by two concentric circles of chinthe. This square urban park makes a grass foreground for the views of modern and colonial Yangon: the twice-rebuilt City Hall, a yellow colonial building with oriental overtones, and the Immanuel Baptist Church (1830).

Cross the busy traffic circle and further east of the City hall is the (former) Immigration Office. Continuing east on Mahabandoola Rd pass a couple of alleyways crammed with food stalls and other goods and take the next major right onto Pansodan St, where on the east side of the street there are several stalls selling second-hand and photocopied books, colloquially referred to as Yangon's open-air library. About halfway down this block you’ll see the High Court Building on your right. At the end of Pansodan St at the cross with Strand Rd. there are the huge Inland Water Transport offices and the even grander Myanmar Port Authority buildings. Here a footbridge take you to the other side of Strand Rd where there is the passenger Jetty on the Yangon River, with the restored façade of the Strand Hotel on the other side.

A short taxi ride and we are at Botataung Paya. After the unfortunate bombing during the WWII the pagoda has been rebuilt hollow with inside a sort of gold leaf coated maze. Inside the precinct a hall containing a large gilded bronze Buddha and a large pond full of hundreds of terrapin turtles. Back to the Sule Paya, we continue west down Mahabandoola Rd through the chaotic Indian and Chinese quarters of the city until we reach Sri Kali Indian temple, where we had enough of the city and finally headed to:

Shwedagon Pagoda (the Golden Stupa)
It is practically impossible to describe the Shwedagon in detail owing to the elaboration of its architecture, chapels columns and figures set up around the great golden cone in the centre. Its long and complex history starts from the xi c since then the pagoda has been repaired several times. Its present shape dates to xvii c. Since then the stupa has undergone several minor repairs, and its surface decoration and gilding is renewed every year.

Four covered flight of steps ascend the Singuttara hill where the pagoda stands. Guarded by two colossal chinthe (half lion, half-dragon guardian figures) the southern stairway is the main entrance and the road departing from it leads directly to Yangon River. The pilgrims ascend the stairway lined with a series of shops. Halfway stretched full length on the balustrade is the huge sculptured Nga Moe Yeik the Crocodile. A series of wood carvings hangs at the sides of the gallery narrating the legend of the Shwedagon Paya with human and animal figures carved in colored panels.
From semi-gloom of the walkway you emerge into the platform under the sky, where the great stupa stands. A dazzling explosion of incredible assortment of smaller zedi, statues, temples, shrines, images and tazaung (small pavilions). Various figures too surround the pagoda: Nats, elephants and various fabulous beasts a curious a blend of the beautiful and the grotesque.

And in the midst rises the great golden pagoda covered from top to bottom with a layer of pure gold. The hti on top of the seven ringed pinnacle, gathers diamonds emeralds and rubies, although none of these can be seen from below. Underneath its decorated "skin" the stupa made of bricks, solid all the way through. A series of angled terraces create a graceful transition between its square platform and the circular base of the "bell." Various planetary posts around the base conform to the days of the week, and locals pray at the station that represents the day they were born. At the four cardinal points there is a prayer hall where the pilgrims worship a Buddha image with a Buddha image.
