Sekh Narayan - Pharping Vajra Jogini - Asura Cave

Sekh Narayan (Shesh Narayan) temple is one of the four Vishnu temple built at the cardinal points of the Kathmandu valley, the others are Changu Narayan, Ichangu Narayan and Budhanilkantha. By the side of the road, below a sheer rock, there is a very attractive group of pools surrounded by religious buildings. Hindus worship Vishnu here as the ‘remainder’ of the cosmos, with the snake Shesh (Ananata) symbolized by the pools, in one of the ponds there is a beautiful half-submerged sculpture of Surya (xii-xiii c). The pools are often used by local people for every day laundry. The main temple is reached by a short flight of steps. To the right of the temple there is a cave that Buddhists call Yanglesho the retreat cave of the Guru Padmsambhava.

On a hillside above Pharping village there is the Tibetan area with several monasteries, temples and retreat centres. Vajra Jogini temple (xvii c), one of the four main Vajra Jogini shrines of the valley, the three-storied pagoda is part of a courtyard complex resembling a Buddhist bahal.

From the temple a footpath reaches the hill top. Before going up onto the wooded hill we raised, like all the pilgrims, our prayer flags. Higher up the hillside there is the Asura cave (Gorakhnath's Cave for the Hindus), from this cave, Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) emerged in the 8th century claiming to be "awakened" or "enlightened" after years of meditation. Across from the cave sits a Hindu shrine with the Vishnu's feet, originally found within the cave they were later removed, this site is significant to both Hindu and Buddhist. In recent decades several Tibetan Buddhist temples and monasteries have been constructed on the hill slope. The hill top is literally covered with thousands and thousands prayer flags.
Descending the path passes by the shrine of the Self-Arisen Tara Image. During the last 35 years people have noticed that a rock began to look more and more like Tara, at the same time the form of Ganesh also appeared.
