Swayambhunath

The Mahacaitya of Swayambhunath, the ‘Self Existent Lord’ is one of the earliest foundations if not the earliest of the Valley, established on top of an isolated hill about the beginning of the 5th century CE.
Surrounded by forests of statues, caityas, prayer flags and over 200 prayer wheels, the 2000 years old Buddhists Stupa of Swayambhunath is among the holiest and most enigmatic shrines in Nepal. Worshipped by countless devotees from all over the Buddhist world it has always been considered the most sacred place and the most powerful shrine in the Himalayas. Although a Buddhist shrine, the place is revered also by the Hindus.
The ensemble of the Buddhist Stupas of Swayambhu is listed as UNESCO world heritage site.

Its white dome and golden spire are visible from the entire valley. At the base of the hill a brightly painted gateway give access to the pilgrims ascending the 365 steps. At the top of the stairway there is the great vajra (Tibetan: Dorje). On the sides there are two identical white shikhara temples (Pratapura and Anantapura). A large number of caityas are scattered around the area either covered or with the four dyanibuddha on them. On the western side close to the Bhutanese Gompa the popular temple dedicated to Hariti-Ajima (Bhuddhist-Hindu) the protector against smallpox. Nearby there are various statues with among them Tara, Yamuna and Ganga surveying the eternal flame of the temple.

The stupa itself consists of a dome and a golden spire with the famous eyes of Wisdom and Compassion, symbol of God's all-seeing perspective, above a pinnacle with thirteen rings, characteristic of the Mahacaitya, surmounted by an umbrella on the top. On each side of the stupa within elaborately decorated gilt copper repousse there are the shrines of the five Tathagatas Buddha: Aksobhya and Vairochana (East), Ratnasambhava (South), Amitabha (West) and Amoghasiddhi (North). In intermediate position the shrines of their consorts the four Taras.
The circumambulation usually starts with the worship of Aksobhya, the first niche encountered at the end of the ascent of the eastern stairway, the Mahacaitya is encircled by 1920 prayers wheels. The ritual incorporate offerings of vermilion, rice, flowers, fire and water. The circumambulation touches also the mansions of the five elements: Vasupura earth and fertility, Vayupura the wind, Agnipura the fire, Santipura the space and Nagpura the water, the abode of serpents.

Thirty-four votive caityas of various type form a cluster nearby a black stone statue of Dipankara known also as the Buddha of light standing in varadamudra.
From here you reach the temple of Santipura, the great door is flanked by stone lions and tiger headed dakinis and a standing Santipura Buddha to the right. Nearby the temple a gilded statue of Aksobhya with the gesture to touch earth.
Leading West you will reach a the western smaller stupa near the car park where a taxi will take you back to Kathmandu.
