Ta Keo is a huge stone pyramid of five levels with the simple, massive form framed by the large trees. The quincunx towers appear as the silhouette of a single group, seemingly joined. It was built as the temple mausoleum of King Jayavarman V during the x c.
This is the first realisation in sandstone of such a structure, the arrangement cutting and placing of the enormous blocks of stone, without any moulding or decoration, remains perfectly clear.

It is not known why the work on this temple was abandoned just after the start of its ornamentation, perhaps it was struck by a lightning, an evil omen, and never completed.
